There is something NEW in this year’s Art Contest!
Winning a medal in the Art Contest has always been a great accomplishment, but in 2010, it will be even more rewarding than it has been in the past. This year, Southwestern College will add even more value to the prestigious medals by also awarding scholarships to Medalists and Honorable Mentions in the high school junior and senior divisions, as well as in the adult divisions. The Grand Canyon State Games Art Contest sponsored by Southwestern College promotes creativity through art as an effective method for artists of ALL ages (grades K-12, adults ages 19-24, and 25+) to express their dreams and ideas for a successful life and a better community. This contest continues to invite all 47 other State Games to compete in this competition. 2010 marks the 19th anniversary of the Grand Canyon State Games. Over the years, more than 392,000 participants have had the chance to enjoy the spirit of competition in sports, games, and art/essay contests. The Art Contest expands that opportunity to encourage artists of all ages to convey their ideas through creative expression as well. The vision of healthy self-improvement through friendly competition continues in the
Art Contest.

THEMES
- Get Up! Get Active! Get Involved! Get Healthy! Show why your lifestyle should include exercising, eating right, and getting plenty of sleep in order to build a healthy body and mind and a strong heart.
- We use the word “community” in many ways. Show what community means to you.
- Almost 200 years ago, around 1812, the character “Uncle Sam” was created and came to represent the U.S. If you had that assignment today, what would that character look like in 2010?
- You may have heard the phrase, “There is no ‘I’ in team.” Portray what you think that means.
- “Draw the Line” by saying NO to alcohol and drugs. Display how avoiding alcohol, drugs, and tobacco can enhance your life, your family’s life, and your community.
- “Character Counts” Illustrate how practicing one or more of the six pillars of character (trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship) makes you a better person.
- Communication technology – email, texting, Twitter, Facebook, etc. – show what impact you think it has had.
- Sit on the Sidelines or get in the game? Portray why it is important to “Get in the Game” and be active in the fight against obesity.
