2009 Venues of the Year

The Grand Canyon State Games uses over 200 sporting Venues a year to host the thousands of athletes that make up our competitions. Selecting one site from some of the best sporting venues in Arizona was difficult; so we chose two. This year’s winners are: The City of Scottsdale Recreation Division’s Indian School Park represented by Andy Passmonick and The Salt River Pima Indian Community at the Salt River Recreation Center represented by Randy Gill.

Indian School Park was utilized more then any other facility during the 2009 competitions. We played Baseball (twice), bean bag toss (twice), sand volleyball (Twice), Arm Wrestling (twice) and Tennis (twice) – that’s 10 competitions. A very unusual relationship for a non-profit and a City facility to work this closely together - Now that’s Community spirit and it works!

The Salt River Recreation Dept was almost as generous but every bit the gracious hosts. We played over ½ of the entire Lori Piestewa National Native American Games at their facilities – Weightlifting, Basketball, Baseball & Volleyball. Most of the Staff was involved as supervisors, volunteers, grounds crew or Commissioners. Again unsurpassed Community Spirit! Congratulations to both organizations for their generosity.
